Course Description
The creative process is introduced using the visual elements of both additive and subtractive color and the basic principles of design. A variety of concepts, materials, and techniques are used in class to investigate the aesthetic and psychological principles of design. Students will be able to utilize the basic principles and elements of design theory as they apply to their assigned projects.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Distinguish the basic visual elements of design, line, shape, value, texture and color.
- Utilize the concepts of unity, verity, contrast, dominance, craftsmanship, appropriateness, balance, and harmony in their design.
- Explain color contrast. (Hue, value, saturation, warm/cool, complementary, simultaneous and extension.)
- Explain additive and subtractive color theory.
- Distinguish the relative aspects of color perception and the applicability to solving problems.
- Demonstrate symbolic, emotional, and visual use of color.
- Gain basic understanding of the color theories that apply to different output devices.
