Course Description

A study of the principles of sound reproduction and digital recording. Students are introduced to sound characteristics, microphone types and usage, basic acoustical principles, basic sound design objectives, audio file types and principles of operation and production. Students will also be exposed to the basics of conventional analog tape recording for the purpose of digital archiving.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Understand how sound is produces and process of signal flow.
  • Explain how audio and sound production has evolved over the time.
  • Set an appropriate level on an audiometer.
  • Comprehend the differences between analog and digital recording.
  • Distinguish between various formats of recording media.
  • Demonstrate the skill and thought process necessary to produce a sound track in analog and digital format.
  • Distinguish between the use of live sound in recording and the use of postproduction sound elements.
  • Identify the types of microphones.
  • Use microphones to record audio into a computer.
  • Record and edit basic voice.
  • Select a suitable music and sounds for a voice track.
  • Understand how to score narration tracks with music and sound effects.
  • Synchronize audio with video.
  • Understand the place of audio in the life cycle of film production.
  • Explain the evolution of digital technology in sound production.
  • Understand different roles of producer in sound production.
